Gilded Cage by Jeffrey Armstrong II

Acrylic on canvas board

Meet the artist: Jeffrey Armstrong II

Inspiration:

Inside of a prison, you are told to grow, yet this unnatural setting of stress only robs one of life and instead breaks them more. All the money spent to keep me caged and yet they're still missing the point - Nature versus Nurture. I see beyond my confines to grow, to lose my thorns and to escape the wilting. I don't belong here, I'm not here to suffer and die, I'm here to grow in my natural environment. Nature is free and better than this gilded cage in darkness.

What role does art play in your life?

The way I see the world, other creations, they draw me in. I seek to put my print, my spin upon this planet. An idea gives idea, Manga, anime, cartoons, video games, architecture, music, movies and nature itself spark the creative flow within me.

Artist statement:

I grew up on the southside of Minneapolis and I used to draw on the walls. I see the world around me shaped by others and found myself wanting. I was always drawing in class instead of studying, and as I got older I tried my hand at different mediums. The spark of inspiration drives me to create - not money. Some days I feel lost without it, other days my vertigo keeps me from doing much of anything. My understanding of this world grew with my skills and I find new concepts and ways to express the inner me to the world.
